2007 July Trip to
Thunder Bay, etc.
Monday,
we headed north through Wisconsin on a cloudy, rainy day, through Superior,
Wisconsin, and then over the bridge to Duluth.
From there we went to Gooseberry Falls where we saw two deer. We did some hiking by the river at
Tettegouche State Park, stopping to see the cross at the Cross
River. It is a monument to a
priest. We stayed at Silver Bay.
Tuesday,
we hiked by the river at Temperance River State Park and stopped at a new park
at Sugar Beach with an interpretive trail about woods and logging. It was interesting.
At Cascade there was a lot of water. We spent a lot of time there hiking. We ate supper at an unusual restaurant in Tofte
– we had pizza on a crisp, firm bread like crust with chicken, spinach, spiced
tomatoes, Canadian bacon, and mushrooms.
Wednesday, we headed to Judge Magney State Park where
we hiked up the Brule River to the falls and Devil’s Cauldron – about 2.5
miles. We then stopped at Grand Portage
State Park and walked to Hall Falls – it was lovely. We crossed the border, found a motel, and ate
at a Greek restaurant that had excellent wraps with salad. At Marina Park in Thunder Bay, we had a great
view of the sleeping giant.
Thursday,
we drove east to the Ouimet Canyon where we walked 1 km to the rim. There were two viewing platforms and tame
chipmunks. On the way back we stopped at
the Terry Fox monument. It had a great
view of the sleeping giant. Next, we
went to Fort William.
There
was a beautiful new visitor center. In
the fort we tasted several food samples and visited with the living history
actors – a farmer, blacksmith, Indian girl, voyageurs, and their wives. They all did a good job.
Next,
we went to a shopping center under threatening clouds. We spent the rest of the rainy afternoon in
our motel, going out for a Chinese supper.
Friday was a clear day. We set out early to see Kakabeka
Falls, viewing it from both sides of the river.
There was a lot of water – it was beautiful and loud. We headed home through International
Falls. On the way we ran into some
construction and one long wait. We got
home at 7:30 pm.
